It’s finally boots season again …. yay!! Yesterday was an especially gorgeous fall day so it was the perfect time to bring out my fave boots! Typically, I would’ve thrown in a dash of brighter color with this outfit but, I really just wanted to wear the grey boots …. hehe! :)

Empty streets of my town, hours before Sandy hit

As I’m sure most of you know, the Northeast was rocked by the devastating super storm Sandy, last week. If you were in Sandy’s path, I hope you’re safe! Though I didn’t suffer much damage at all (only lost power for 2 nights), I know that the loss is very real.

Down trees in my neighborhood.
I spent 2 days making calls and driving to shelters, offering donations and my time. However, it was impossible for me to do so and I was so frustrated. Then, a friend of mine sent me a link from the City of Hoboken’s website saying they were welcoming all volunteers. So, on Saturday, a friend and I drove out to Hoboken to volunteer! We spent a couple hours going door-to-door, checking for people, to see if they needed medical attention, hot food, etc. Then we spent about 3-4 hours sorting all donations so they could be distributed or sent out to shelters.
Tons of donations!
Walking around Hoboken, after we were done volunteering, it was heartwarming to see how the community comes together in the midst of a disaster –
Charge your phone and grab some chocolate!
Volunteers picking up garbage.
“Save your food on our BBQ”

We saw a group on strangers, charging their phones on the side of the street, playing “Apples to Apples”. So, we decided to join them! These experiences are so priceless!!
While we were walking around, talking to some locals, we had an interesting conversation with a guy – He said to us “I got up today and didn’t even shower. Just left and went to the city. I can see how people just start to give up and lose it.” He was referring to the fact that at that point, most of Hoboken was without power and it was virtually empty because residents had left. Eerie, huh?
It’s the resilience and the sense of community that’s going to help us get through the devastation caused by Sandy. It’s really important, however, for us to help out as much as we can – whether it’s through donations or volunteering, or both. I, for one, am really looking forward to volunteering over the next weeks/months!
How did Sandy affect you?

I had been on the hunt for a budget-friendly pair of wedge sneakers for a while and eventually, I gave up. Over the summer when I was interning at New Balance, I had to do store visits and during one of those store visits, I saw this pair at DSW and my search finally came to an end! Well, I finally had a pair of wedge sneakers and then came the million dollar question – How on earth do I style these things? Of course, I Googled it but it was all pictures of celebrities wearing em and clearly, I’m not tall and skinny like them so that didn’t help much.

Last week I saw someone wearing leather leggings with a tee and wedge sneakers and I thought – bingo! So, I finally figured out how to style these! :)

Pardon the look on my face – it had just started raining! :(

Over the years, I’ve seen many a shorts that I loved at first sight, but they never loved me back. When I laid eyes on these shorts though, they look back at me and I knew they loved me back! So, I brought them home with me. I was dying to take them out on a date but it’s been too cold the past couple weeks. Yesterday, however, the weather was warm enough so, we went out together to run errands.

Rainy and cloudy as it was, these shorts and I had a lovely time on our date and I am so glad I brought them home with me!

Sweater: H&M, Shorts: TJ Maxx, Bag: Aldo’s (Similar – here), Shoes: Simple Vera Vera Wang for Kohl’s (Old)
Ring: 6pm (Gifted), Necklace: Anthropologie (Old), Bracelets: Forever21 and Loehmann’s
Do you have a favorite pair of shorts?

With Fall setting in and the days getting shorter and shorter, my motivation to get up in the morning has become non-existent! I catch myself hitting snooze over and over, not wanting to get out of bed.
In an attempt to save precious time in the morning, I have tried my best to simplify my make-up routine to just the basics – a technique that takes just 5 minutes!

(1) BB Cream: This product that was initially very popular in Asia has now hit the US mainstream. BB cream is my favorite time-saver as it incorporates a moisturizer (with SPF), primer, tinted moisturizer/foundation, concealer and mattifier into one small tube leaving you with flawless skin in one single step. RecommendSmashbox Camera Ready BB Cream, $39

(2) Setting Powder: I like using a setting powder after foundation to prevent excess oil and add a slight glow. Recommend: Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Powder, $32

(3) Bronzer/Highlighter: A bronzer or highlighter can be used to add a little color, especially when skin tends to get paler in colder months. They can also be used to contour the face. Recommend: TANtalizer ® Highligter & Matte Bronzer Duo, $32

(4) Eyeliner: A thin swipe of eyeliner on upper and lower lids gives eyes an instant pop. Pencil liners tend to be easier to use than messy liquid liners in the morning. Recommend: Estée Lauder Automatic Eye Pencil Duo, $25

(5) Eyelash curler: Every girl should invest in a good eyelash curler! A 3-second pinch makes a huge difference in creating a wide-eyed look with beautifully curled lashes. Recommend: Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler, $20

(6) Eyelid primer: I didn’t realize the value of a good eyelid primer until a few years ago. I used to wonder why my eye-shadow would always slide off my skin. Then I started using eyelid primer (which is different than regular skin primer) and saw a difference immediately. Eyelid primer should be used anytime you apply eye-shadow to ensure all day coverage. Recommend: Too Faced Shadow Insurance, $18

(7) Eyeshadow: For daytime use, I prefer a soft shadow of neutral shades just to add some color and dimension to the face. There are many palettes that are available with softer shades that can be used during the day and transition right into night. Recommend: Too Faced Naked Eye Soft & Sexy Eye Shadow Collection, $36.

(8) Lip Gloss/Stain: I prefer lip glosses and stains to lipsticks because they look more natural and also last longer. Early in the morning, I hate the feeling of having makeup caked on my face. Lip stains and glosses provide a less heavy alternative to lipsticks and give sheer, natural color. Recommend: Laura Mercier Lip Glace in Baby Doll, $24; Tarte LipSurgenceTM Matte Lip Tint in Hope-warm rose, $24

I timed myself to see exactly how long steps 1 through 8 would take, and even with the time needed to rummage through my make-up bag it took me 5 minutes and 11 seconds! By minimizing your morning prep time you’ll have a few extra minutes to get some zzzs or cuddle time ;) ! Good luck guys, and Happy Fall!!

Sheela
