Travel Diary – Weekend in Denver, CO

Denver-Sign-Downtown

Well, this one is long overdue. I went to Denver, CO for a quick weekend trip, back in May, and I’m sharing a bit of what I did, where I went, etc. I’d stayed with a friend of mine, and she had the whole weekend off. So, she was my tour guide, which I am so grateful for! Thanks, Ramie! I was only there for 2.5 days, but it was a packed weekend! Here’s my little guide to a weekend in Denver, CO! PS – Did y’all know Denver is called the Mile-High City, because its elevation is exactly one mile above sea-level?!

Friday: I flew in early Friday morning – I got there around 10am, I believe. After getting to my friend’s place, we hung out for a little bit, and then headed to lunch and this little Thai place. After lunch, we headed to 16th street mall, in downtown Denver.

If you’re visiting Denver, I would highly recommend packing comfortable shoes, because you’ll be doing a lot of walking. We spent a couple hours walking around 16th street mall, grabbed coffee and Caribou coffee, Tindered and chatted. We checked out a “dispensary”, as one does, when in CO. We went to Native Roots Apothecary – it was pretty interesting (no, I didn’t try anything – I’m a chicken when it comes to things like that)! I pretty much felt like a badass just being in a dispensary, ha!

Friday night, my friend had tickets to a country music show – Whiskey Myers – at The Grizzly Rose. I’d been living in TX for almost a year, at that point, and had never been to a country music show. So, I figured it was about time. It was a lot of fun, and after the concert, we stayed back for some two-stepping. It was my first time two-stepping, and it was so much fun – so many handsome cowboys! *insert heart-eyed emoji here*

Saturday: After all the screaming, and dancing Friday night, we definitely needed to sleep in on Saturday. Once we were up, it was on to, obviously, the most important decision of the weekend – where to get brunch. We ended up going to O’Linger (or Linger) and you guys, I can’t recommend it enough. So, I love places with interesting stories, and boy, does this place have one. It used to be a mortuary, and they ended up keeping the original sign –

I talked to our waitress and she told me that the rooftop, where we were sitting, is above what used to be the parlor. So, maybe a little less eerie? Their Latin Street Brunch is pretty good – I loved the Green Gringo Citrus Horchata (Housemade Rice Milk, Vanilla, Cinnamon, Kale, Lemon, Ginger, Coconut Nectar & Avocado). It was so freakin’ good!

The service/management at O’Linger were also really good. Another cool place to check out for brunch/drinks is Avanti Food & Beverage – they also have a pretty nice view. After brunch, we headed back to downtown to explore some more.

We only got to go into the cathedral briefly, because there was a (very long) wedding going on, but what we saw of the inside was absolutely stunning! We actually walked outside and across the street, and there was a very frustrated guy, clearly a wedding guest, asking if the wedding was over yet – ha!

Saturday night we had tickets to see Dada Life at the Red Rocks Ampitheatre – the whole reason I picked that particular weekend to visit. Seeing a concert at Red Rocks had been on my bucket list, and I really like EDM. The concert was insane, you guys, and Red Rocks is truly incredible. I mean, it’s really something. If/when you get a chance to see a concert there – go! I don’t know if I’d necessarily recommend an EDM concert, because – drugs. Everywhere. That part was pretty scary, but we made it out alive, thankfully. Now that Snapchat has Memories, I’ll be posting some of the videos from the concert over the next couple days. Sunday: My return flight was on Sunday, so, we didn’t have time to do much. We woke up pretty late, and then headed to Tamayo, in Larimer Sq, for a Mexican brunch/lunch. After lunch, we did some relaxing before Ramie took me to the airport, for my flight back!

tomayo-denver-richard-sandoval How fun is the bar at Tomayo!

Other places to go/things to do: Definitely spend some time walking around Larimer Square, especially at night, what with all the pretty lights across the streets, and tons of restaurants, bars and shopping.

Here are some of my favorites –

green-russell-denver-co Drinks & pretzel bites at The Green Russell in Larimer Sq. It’s such an interesting, speakeasy-type place, with snazzy bartenders, and prohibition-era inspired cocktails! I mean, how perfectly mood-setting is this entrance?

osteria-marco-denver Wine & cheese at Osteria Marco, also in Larimer Sq.

denver-colorado-best-view Coffee & a good book at the Anschutz Family Sky Terrace, at the Museum of Nature & Science. It’s beautiful up there, with incredible views of the skyline and the Rocky mountains.

And that wraps it up – the perfect, little weekend in Denver, CO!
